How do I get my business on Google Maps?

A step-by-step guide to setting up your free Google Business Profile.

To appear on Google Maps, you need a Google Business Profile. It's free, and it's what shows up when someone searches for a business like yours nearby.

1. Sign in with an account you own

Go to business.google.com and use a Google account that belongs to you or your business. Avoid an account someone else controls, because it can be hard to get back later.

2. Add or claim your business

Type in your business name. If it already appears, claim it. If it doesn't, create a new profile with that name.

3. Choose your category carefully

Pick the closest match to your main business, such as Cafe, Hair salon or Plumber. It's one of the most important choices in your profile.

4. Say how customers reach you

If customers visit your premises, add your address. If you go to your customers, you can hide your address and add the areas you serve.

5. Add your phone and website

Use the same business name, phone number and website everywhere online. Consistent details make it easier for Google to trust the listing.

6. Verify your business

Google needs to confirm you're real, and the method varies. It may ask for a short video showing your vehicle, signage or tools, or send a code. This can take a few days.

Once you're verified

  • Add your hours, services and a short description
  • Upload real photos of your business
  • Ask happy customers for reviews using your review link
  • Reply politely to every review
  • Post an update every couple of weeks

Getting listed is the first step. Where you appear also depends on how close the searcher is, so nobody can promise you a top spot everywhere. A complete, active profile gives you the best chance.
